Question : Need to monitor intermetent internet droppage

We have a Win2003 server with two NICS. One connected to Watgaurd for Internet Access, the other card serving local Lan.

internet = 10.0.0.1
Lan = 10.0.1.x

Win 2003 works fine, clients work fine.

About once or twice an hour, the internet drops out from 3 - 10 secs. Recovers automatically.

I need to narrow down which equipment is causing the issue, the T1, the Watchgaurd or the Win2003 server.

Looking for suggestions to monitor connectvity.

Answer : Need to monitor intermetent internet droppage

There are few ways I think this can be done:
 Crude way:
        run ping with -t option for continuous pings, to the external device and log the entire session; and run tracert; looking at the logs you would know which hop failed.

On WG Edge X 20 configure syslog; if you have linux/unix machine they already have syslog server running otherwise on one of the windows machine configure freeware Kiwi syslog daemon [http://www.kiwisyslog.com/kiwi-syslog-daemon-overview/]; now looking at the logs you would know if the external interface of the Edge went down if yes; then it is ISP issue; if there are issues with Edge otself they would also become evident from the logs.

I would say start with configuring logging on Edge and then depending if we get some useful logs or not we can then proceed further. Please let me know if you need details on configuring syslog server on Edge.

Thank you.
