Question : Novell network - transition from BNC to UTP - how hard is it?

I have a nowell network wich consist of 1 server and 20 clients. This is a BNC network. Due to a fact that most of the cables are very old, they are giving us more and more headache, so I am thinking of moving to UTP. Since all the NICs are 10Mbit, I would like to replace them with PCI 100Mb UTP NICs. Almost all of the Pcs are of new generation, and many of them have built in 100Mb NICs. Here are the questions, and please take into consideration that I have worked with Windows networks only:

1) is this possible, and is this transition easy?
2) How hard is to configure new PCI network cards on the clients?
3) How hard is to configure new gigabit PCI NIC on the server?
4 ) Does server need some additional configuration to be made (except for the new NIC installation)?
5) Can I set server to support both networks (to leave the BNC NICs), just until I am positive that new UTP network is running ok?

Please note that I have had a several years experience in PC service, and am maintaining several small windows networks (up to 40 Pcs), but no experience with novell.

Thanks,
Goran

Answer : Novell network - transition from BNC to UTP - how hard is it?

You've left outer some very important information -- what is the OS running on the PC's?  What version of Netware is running?.  Are you connection to the server using IP or IPX?  What network client software is being used on the PC's?

But, some general answers:

1) yes. and maybe -- it's certainly not too hard

2) If you are using Windows 2000 Pro, or XP/Pro, once you have the new NIC installed, simply go to the network connection properties and make sure the Novell Netware client is bound to the card

3) Very easy --load the drivers, and bind a network address to it.  More specific instructions can come when we see more details about your network

4) no

5 Absolutely
