Question : Ppros/cons--VPN vs Remote Desktop Access

I know the basic difference between VPN's and Remote Desktop Access, but what are the pros and cons of each?  How does one decide which way to go?  Is there a security difference?  Guidance and suggestions will be appreciated!

The best way to solve a problem of connecting these two sites is to setup a VPN connection between them, this way every machine at both sites would be able to access each other.
