Question : Cannot access network resources through SBS 2003 VPN Connection

I have an SBS 2003 configured for Remote Access.  Users download the Connection Manager through the internal website and use it to VPN into the server.  One user in particular is not able to access network resources once logged in.  Originally, he was not able to connect at all.  In order to resolve this problem, I changed his DHCP addressing scheme on his home network to a seperate scheme than that of the office network.  Now, he can successfully log in.  Once logged in, he can ping the server both by ip address, as well as by FQDN.  However, when attempting to browse to the shared folders on the server he receives a network path not found error.  When he issues either of the following two commands:

net use x: \\servername\sharedfolder
net use x: \\192.168.1.34\sharedfolder

He is returned this error:

System 53 error has occurred.
The network path is not found.

I can successfully log in and execute both of these commands from through my home VPN connection.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brennon

Answer : Cannot access network resources through SBS 2003 VPN Connection

On this series of Linksys I believe there is a "PPTP Pass Through" option on the "Filters" page of the router's web interface. Enable it. Once that's done, I believe you don't even need to worry about any port mapping inside the LinkSys.

However, there may be other firewalls or devices acting like firewalls at work. If you determine that the Cable Modem has any firewall/port blocking capability, either disable entirely (since the Linksys is already handling that function) it or at minimum open up the above ports and map them to your workstation's IP.

Also, if the user is running XP SP2 and has the Windows Firewall enabled, the config can get a little tricky there. You need to open up the above ports, used by Windows file & print sharing, for both the IP/subnet of his local network AND that of the server's network.

On the server's end, you'll need port 1723 opened up for IP type 47 (GRE) traffic, but that must already be in place since you say your other locations are able to connect.
