Question : AOL Hell, trying to connect via D-Link Router
|
|
I just bought a D-Link router last night. I get a link when i have everything plugged in. I went through the entire proccess of setting the router up through DHCP, cloned the mac address etc... My problem is there seems to be something blocking aol from getting out. Is there something that I should be doing to unblock to get AOL to run. I called D-link and they told me to call AOL, then AOL told me to call D-link, figured i was in a loop becasue they had no clue what to do. Also for some reason I am unable to connect to the internet without signing onto AOL. Usually when I set up a computer with AOL Broadband I can use IE or Firefox without signing on AOL first.

Not really, you need to make adjustments to the first response for it to work with cable.
Step 1: For cable you should use DHCP. The step with setting the TCP/IP connection holds true.
Around step 3 you may want to try to clone your MAC address.
You can raise the MTU up to about 1472 and still have a reliable connection, in my experience.

As for having to signon, it's part of aol's configuration as far as I can tell to require you to use the aol software first. Originally when my modem was setup and the Time Warner rep. was telling me about the config settings I was unable to logon to aol, but could access the internet. Once a setting was tweaked aol could connect, but no internet access was available unless I signed on first.
Hope that helps some.
