Question : Windows 2003 Server and unable to access or add users

I have a network setup in my classroom using Windows 2003 Server as my domain controller. It has worked flawlessly for 2 years. However, when I attempt to add a user it comes back with the following error:

"The directory Service has exhausted the pool of relative identifiers"

I am not allowed to create or copy an account. What causes this and how can I fix it?

thanks!!!

Answer : Windows 2003 Server and unable to access or add users

Just to add a second string to this. In windows 2000/2003 there is a system of roles (FSMO's or operations masters) that are associated with the domain controllers. One of these is the RID master. These 'role' is responsible for allocating a batch of ID's for allocation to new objects such as users, printers etc. If the RID master is not available, then new ID's cannot be allocated. have you changed servers, DNS configurations etc recently?

If you only have the one DC,
In the administrative tools, open the users and computers snap-in
right-click your domain name and select operations masters.
You will see three tabs PDC emulator, RID Master, etc
Select the RID master
What server name is against it? Is it correct?

To check if your server is a global catalog,
open the sites and services snap-in
open sites - internal site - servers
Right-click the server name and choose properties. Is global catalog ticked? If yes, (and this is the only server), I would suggest you have a dns issue. DNS is used to identify many of the interlinks/services that are used.

Lets see what you have so far though :)
