Question : Enable ICS with Windows Firewall kills Network File/Print Sharing
|
|
Ok...let me start by saying my questions usually have a simple answer but tend to be complicated in question. I have a 3 computer network. 2000 server, XP Pro Desk, and XP Pro Lap. I'm connected to a router using 10.10.1.0/255.255.255.0. I'm using static IP's on the entire network with no DHCP server.
I've had a workgroup network with file/print sharing working fine forever. I recently installed a virtual machine (PearPC) on the desktop. The virtual OS (MacOSX) required me to enable ICS on my XP Desk Local Area Connection. This made available 192.168.0.0 DHCP subnet on the LAN adapter for the Virtual machine which resides in XP Desk Network Connections. The LAN adapter remains statically assigned 10.10.1.4.
In doing so I can no longer access files on XP Desk using any method of file sharing I know of (net places, mapping, run->\\computer\share)...nothing works anymore. I can see the 2000 server fine from XP Lap. 2000 server cannot access shares on XP Desk. I can still use Remote Desktop from the XP Lap to the XP Desk (by IP only now) but not file sharing.
If I disable the Windows firewall on XP Desk LAN everything works. I would like to find the solution without simply turning off the Windows firewall. And yes, the check box for File/Print is still checked. There must be something small I'm missing here. Thanks for thinking. -DF

Try manually adding the gateway on the virtualy machine, setting the metric to 1 and the interface to 2. On the Lan adaptor set the metric to 2 and the interface to 1. This might help, though after reading this again it might more of a port issue with the firewall.
Here is an article that might help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308127
