DHCP Not Working
My Windows laptop was unable to use DHCP with a DSL modem (which had other users successfully using DHCP). I was able to statically configure my address, SM, & GW and it worked fine.
C:\bat>ipconfig /all

C:\bat>ipconfig /renew
Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : An invalid argument was supplied.
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : An invalid argument was supplied.
Notice that this laptop has both a 10/100 NIC and 802.11g. DCHP did not work for either network interface.
Here are the steps that I took trying to troubleshoot this problem:
I reset TCP/IP networking:
netsh int ip reset
C:\bat>netsh int ip /?
The following commands are available:
Commands in this context:
? - Displays a list of commands.
add - Adds a configuration entry to a table.
delete - Deletes a configuration entry from a table.
dump - Displays a configuration script.
help - Displays a list of commands.
reset - Resets TCP/IP and related components to a clean state.
set - Sets configuration information.
show - Displays information.
To view help for a command, type the command, followed by a space, and then type ?.
C:\bat>netsh int ip reset
C:\bat>
I confirmed that the DHCP service is running - OK.
I confirmed that the Firewall (both Windows and ZoneAlarm) is turned off - OK.
I checked the NIC advanced properties for statically set parameters (no autonegotiation) - there are none - OK.
[media type, speed, duplex]
Also made sure that TCP/IP filtering is turned off under the advanced properties of TCP/IP.
What else can I do to find out what is causing this problem?
The laptop is an Averatec 3200 w/WinXP SP2 Home Edition (built-in 10/100 + 802.11g).
The DSL modem is a Westell A90-327W15-06 VersoLink Gateway (model 327W).
