Question : VPN client unable to connect with VPN server
I have set up my VPN server on my W2K Server and granted myself remote access. The server is connected to cabled to a Dell Truemobile 2300 wireless router which accesses the internet thru a Westell bridged modem.
I am also using a Dell Truemobile 2300 Wireless Router at my home location which also accesses the internet thru a Westell bridged modem.
Using my home machine cabled to the router:
When I try to connect I get the dialog
Verifying Username and Password
and then the error
Err 628: The connection was closed
Using my laptop accessing the router via wireless:
When I try to connect I get the dialog
Verifying Username and Password
and then the error
Err 721: The remote computer is not responding.
The VPN connection properties on the cabled machine and on the wireless machine are absolutely identical.
The username and password on the cabled machine and on the wireless machine are absolutely identical.
The preceding errors occur when the type of VPN server being called is set to PPTP; if I set the called server type to automatic or L2TP I get different but similar errors on both machines referring to lack of certificates (which I understand as I have no certificate on either machine).
The VPN connection properties on both machines, aside from type of server as mentioned above, are:
Security | Advanced | Allow Microsoft CHAP + For MS-CHAP based protocols automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)
Networking (VPN server has NetBEUI & TCP/IP):
NetBEUI
TCP/IP (properties: obtain IP & DNS server addresses automatically)
Incidentally I have forwarded ports 1723 and 500 on both the 2300 Truemobile routers to which the server is cabled and on the 2300 Truemobile router to which the home machine is cabled and whch is accessed also by the laptop as follows:
Service| Enable | Incoming Ports | Destination IP Address | Destination | Port type
VPN Y 1723-1723 192.168.2.125 1723-1723 TCP&UDP
VPN Y 500-500 192.168.2.125 500-500 TCP&UDP
VPN Y 1723-1723 192.168.2.118 1723-1723 TCP&UDP
VPN Y 500-500 192.168.2.118 500-500 TCP&UDP
If you search in networking for " Truemobile 2300 " there is an interchange beginning on 3/18/04 which seems to indicate that there is a problem with Dell's Truemobile 2300 wireless router - I wonder if this is the case or if you could suggest any server side settings I could try to identify or narrow down the problem.
Regrettably Dell's documentation offers no direction on setup of their router aside from stating that their 2300 supports PPTP, IPSec, L2TP VPN pass-through. More regrettably their telephone support personnel say they are not trained to give support on either the pass-through or anything having to do with VPN.
Thanks in advance for whatever guidance you can offer -
Answer : VPN client unable to connect with VPN server
<< could it be the office 2300 Truemobile router? >>
Yes, you've eliminated the other option, so now it must be in the router at the office. If you could view the router config while the call is coming in, you could see if it is being authenticated or not, and if it is being authenticated, if it is being assigned a IP or not. Some routers let you view this real time, others don't.

There you will find some help manuals and setup instructions. You maybe need to do it over again, perhaps starting from scratch. Check both IPsec and PPTP authentication, and if you can use a telephone line from work, you can "dial in" right over the phone line and test it as you sit there. Good luck
