Question : MS Exchange 2007 with AD

I will be installing a New Exchange server in an existing AD domain. The current AD domain name is "companyname.bos the suffix ".bos" is a geographical abbreviation and not a Fully Qualified Domain suffix.
The New Exchange server will have the "companyname.com" which is a FQDN. In order to take advantage of the features in MS Exchange 2007, and for it to work "properly" it has to be "tied in" to AD domain.

My Questions are as follows:

1. Will I be able to tie in the Exchange server with the DC/AD being that the domain was created using a non FQDN suffix ".bos"

2. If not, will I be able to "rename" the ad domain to the FQDN (companyname.com) so that I can install the Exchange server and integrate it to the AD

3. Am I SOL

Thanks in advance

Answer : MS Exchange 2007 with AD

As Ove touched on, you can set up 'accepted' mail domains - completely different to your internal active directory domain. This is done in the Exchange Management Console:

Organization Configuration -> Hub Transport -> Accepted Domains.

If your AD domain is companyname.bos, you can easily add in accepted domains for companyname.com, companyname.net, entirelydifferentdomain.com.au, and so on.

You won't need to rename the AD domain.

SSL; Exchange will generate a self signed certificate for the exchangeserver.companyname.bos domain, however you can also use a self signed FQDN for exchangeserver.companyname.com, or, recommend to get a properly recognized SSL certificate from somewhere like GoDaddy.com to prevent any 'unrecognized SSL certificate' errors.
