Question : What is IP address

Dear Experts,

I am a bit confused, at work my computer is hooked up to a Domain network and if I want to know what my IP address is I go to to Run in start menu and type in "cmd", I then get the black screen and type in ipconfig, I then get Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS suffix:
IP Address
subnet mask
Default Gateway

Now there is information on those items, I have gone to a site called whatismyipaddress.com and it tells me an IP address that is different the one listed in the black screen, why is that, which one is my IP address?

Thanks,

mars

Answer : What is IP address

Both.

MOST offices and even homes use routers that perform what is called "Network Address Translation".  Think of it like a large company with a main phone number (that's the IP Address whatismyip is providing - the main phone number), then the switchboard (your router) has a list of extensions (your computer's IP Address) and passes the call (information) along to the appropriate person (computer).
