Question : Easy Question - How to setup a home network on Win XP?
|
|
Here are the facts.
I have two machines at home both using Windows XP. Both have D-Link 840+ 802.11b wireless cards in system (ad-hoc peer to peer mode, so no wireless access point installed). The software it comes with recgonises the signal strength on both machines.
My questions is, how on the heck do I setup a network!? This sounds silly and easy, but I found it not to be straight forward.
My aims are as follows:
1. I want the second PC (B) to access the first PC (A) only for the purpose of transferring files between PCs and also for internet connection (which the the first PC has a broadband connection to via a PCI ADSL modem). No routers, gateways, etc.
2. I want to prevent the second PC from being able to access files etc on the first PC, outside either a shared folder or a designated folder.
Can someone please explain how I would set this up and what is the purpose of a "workgroup"? I dont know if I am confusing a workgroup with a network. I used the network connection wizard on the 1st computer which setup a work group, the second PC found it, but was unable to connect to the workgroup (after running the network wizard on the second pc as well) as it didnt have the permission.
Thanks.
Dan.

Hi ey143,
can you run ipconfig /all from a DOS/command prompt (start>run>cmd) on both PC's and post the info.
