Question : Confusing Connectivity problems

I can receive email but not send (connection timeout to smtp server), I can not browse to any web sIte In fIrefox or IE, I receive either a connection reset error, more often no error at all just a blank browser window. Skype will not work or any IM. HOWEVER I can ping any Ip address I try successfully, likewise any host name (so dns seems fine). I can also ftp  both In and out. More confusingly I  can browse the web but only using the Amaya browser and the lynx browser. I have used netsh reset to zap the ip config and have re entered it to eliminate any possible corruption. I have disabled firewall and anti virus. I can not view replies online so I would be grateful if copies could be sent to [email protected]. I have entered this using a friends computer.  If you are not happy to do this but can help please post a reply and I will pick it up in due course. Windows XP Professional Service pack 3

Answer : Confusing Connectivity problems

you have a DNS problem
coming from outside emails use the internet DNS but going out you have to point to the correct location (local DNS with public DNS on it)
ping does not use DNS so it has no problems connecting
what is the setup? is it a standalone XP or a network?
post the DNS config if you want further help
