Question : Going from POP to IMAP

Hello,

Our office just upgraded its email host and now all emails support IMAP. Previously only POP was supported.

Is there a way to tranfer all the Outlook account settings from POP to IMAP. I tried to do it though was unable. I kind of see it as a laborious task.

What would happen to all the emails stored locally? I doubt that uploading a few gigs at go daddy would be a wise choice. I assume that I would keep the current emails as they are and have a cut off date so all workstations transition to IMAP.

What is the most efficient way to go about this?

Thank You for any help.

Answer : Going from POP to IMAP

Ok,

To attempt to wrap this up, you asked the below:-

  1) Is there a way to tranfer all the Outlook account settings from POP to IMAP. I tried to do it though was unable. I kind of see it as a laborious task.

  a) When you create a new email account using IMAP this will download all email from the POP server, so filed mail, folders etc will need to be recreated. Using IMAP however will once setup within your mail client sync everything together such as folders, filed mail etc. I also believe that the IMAP mail will for OUTLOOK at least be created locally in the form of a PST appose to an OST.

  2) What would happen to all the emails stored locally? I doubt that uploading a few gigs at go daddy would be a wise choice. I assume that I would keep the current emails as they are and have a cut off date so all workstations transition to IMAP.

  b) As per my last edit, using OUTLOOK will store POP email in an OST, unless you have set OUTLOOK or THUNDER BIRD to also delete copies of email from the server or leave a copy on the server, when creating the IMAP profile all email will be downloaded again, unfortunatly to the best of my knowledge at least, you will need to manually file your email again, but any created folder will also be created on the IMAP server similar to MS Exchange which i agree would be the best overall solution.

  3) What is the most efficient way to go about this?

  c) I'd personally set up your mail client to use IMAP to see what your users will be experiencing, if all your mail is downloaded again you can disregard any locally stored email.

I hope this helps you...

But as per KvChaos's comment, exchange is the master, its the best email solution that comes to mind, managing calender information etc is also a plus!

Please also note that you are unable to set reminders to emails when using IMAP.

Cheers

Michael
