Question : Compatibility of Netgear DG824M ADSL Wireless Router with Motorola 4100 Surfboard Cable Modem
|

I run a network at home involving two laptops on a wireless network. One laptop is running Win XP, the other Win 98. Neither is always left on.
To do this, I purchased an 'all-in-one' Netgear DG824M ADSL Wireless Router. The router has 4 RJ45 ethernet ports and a single RJ11 connection which plugged into the DSL outlet I had in my old flat.
This setup has been working fine. However, I have moved to a new flat and taken out a cable contract.
The cable company (I'm in the UK - the company is Telewest) have supplied me with a Motorola 4100 Surfboard cable modem. This modem has one USB outlet and one ethernet (RJ45) outlet.
I can connect fine through using the USB cable directly into one of the laptops. However, I'd ideally like to use the wireless functionality that I already have.
I had thought that I could plug the ethernet outlet of the cable modem into one of the four ports on the Netgear router but can't get this to work. I know that this sounds incredibly vague but I'm not familiar with what the potential problems could be.
How should I ideally go about getting wireless functionality with my cable modem?
a) Never going to get anywhere with this as there is no way I can plug the Netgear router into the ethernet outlet of the cable modem? i) In which case what piece of kit do I need to buy instead? b) Just doing something slightly wrong i) Wrong cable? Wrong settings? c) Something else?
I have not been able to find anything on the internet describing anyone who has attempted to do this, but I'm sure there'll be an expert out there who can answer this for me.
Thanks in advance...
Ed
(p.s. If there is any other significant piece of information I have left off then let me know and I'll supply it).

Answer : Compatibility of Netgear DG824M ADSL Wireless Router with Motorola 4100 Surfboard Cable Modem

No, that is a straight thru cable, as the Netgear is a 4 port router with a 5th port for your DSL modem.. No uplink ports, or crossover needed..... They make a good product, and it should work right out of the box, although you will have to configure it for the type of DSL you are receiving... (PPPoE/PPPoA, etc...)
