Question : WIN2K can ping self but nothing on LAN or be pinged.. more, pls read!

Hi,

I'm stumped.

A tech working for me put a new mobo in one of my work computers.  At first, I didn't realize anything was wrong as everything seemed to work, it connected to the DSL modem and was on the internet (as I am on this computer now), etc.

This computer is what customer computers use to get updates, downloads, etc. when in for repair.  When I was working on a customer's computer, I realized it wasn't connecting, so I tried to ping the host (this computer) and it timed out. Of course, I was troubleshooting the problem in the wrong computer especially when I realized each subsequent computer had the same problem pinging the computer in question.

I found my computer could not ping any computer on the LAN, localhost, its own IP.  I resolved this problem by uninstalling Norton Personal Firewall 2003.  Pinging by localhost 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1 all worked again.  BUT!!!  I still cannot ping other workstations on the LAN, BUT, they can all ping each other.

First: Yes, I've tried different NIC's, new cables, uninstalled Client for Microsoft Networking and reinstalled, checked the registry for startup items. Reinstalled Service Pack 3 too.

Second:  I *can* ping over the internet; tracert; etc.  All my internet programs work fine (pcAnywhere, email, browsers of any brand, FTP, etc. etc.).

Third:  I did re-install Norton Per. Firewall; that didn't help.  I uninstalled it again; that didn't help.

Fourth:  I checked my services; doesn't appear to be anything new or out of the ordinary.

Fifth: I can "explore" my workgroup AND all computers on my LAN appear, but if you double-click or try to explore them, you get an error:

\\ is not accessable
The network path was not found.

If a new computer goes online this LAN, it will show up too

Sixth:  If you try to ping this computer by computer name, it will show the proper and current IP address.  Example:

ping seabreeze
answer:

Pinging seabreeze [192.168.0.1] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out

I'm glad I can access the internet at least.  I really need to get this computer back on my network though as it has utils and files I use daily, plus it is the internet proxy server.  I am using ICS for sharing, not 3rd party software.

OK guys;  what have I missed???

thanks in advance!

Loral
