Question : Win98 - cannot access Internet, but can access LAN
|
|
I posted a question here a while ago and it has come to my attention that my guesses at what was wrong were way off track, so I'm going to ask another one under a new topic.
My setup: Win98 desktop hardwired into wireless D-Link router using SMC 2202USB ethernet adapter WinXP desktop using D-Link wireless card WinXP laptop using D-Link access point (functioning as a repeater) and wireless card.
It is with the Win98 machine that I am having problems.
I can access the Internet perfectly well from both the WinXP computers. Furthermore, I have set up a home network between the three computers and that functions well also. I can see the Win98 machine from the desktop&laptop and vice versa, no troubles there.
My problem is that I cannot access the Internet whatsoever from the Win98 machine. I can ping the router, I can ping 127.0.0.1, I can even ping all sites; but when I load up Internet Explorer/Netscape, I get a DNS error or unresolved message wherever I go - even if I try the router's address or 127.0.0.1.
[edit: note I can only ping numbers but not domains - e.g. I can ping 66.220.25.148 but not cricket-online.org]
Something is clearly not right!
When I run ipconfig /all, the results are interesting. It comes up something like: --- 0 Ethernet adapter IP Address 0.0.0.0 Subnet mask 0.0.0.0 Default gateway (blank)
1 Ethernet adapter IP Address 0.0.0.0 Subnet mask 0.0.0.0 Default gateway (blank)
2 Ethernet adapter IP Address 192.168.0.164 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default gateway 192.168.0.1
---
Clearly the ethernet adapter #2 seems to be working correctly while the other two are duds (I'm guessing).
Does anyone out there know how I can fix this problem, or at least offer some advice?
Please feel free to ask questions.
Thomas.

see if this fix helps http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm
" LSP-Fix, that repairs corrupted Winsock stacks. This can be used to remove entries left behind by New.net and similar software, restoring access to machines that cannot connect to the Internet. You can download it here."
