Question : Windows XP Pro network connection drop - WEIRD problem
|
|
Hi,
I'm a consultant with 14 years of experience. I have this customer who got this weird network connection problem.
Quick rundown on network: main network - Fortinet firewall, Win2003 Std servers, DHCP/DNS/WINS on Win2003 server, fairly standard network. remote network - Fortinet firewall (firewalls connected through static IPSEC VPN), uses DHCP on firewall, points DNS/WINS to office server.
Rundown of symptoms / problem:
3 PCs / 1 laptop affected (out of about 30) (2 PCs in main office, 1 laptop and 1 pc in remote office, remote has total of 4 PCs)
2 PCs are Acer Aspire 1 PC is custom built (AMD 64, nVidia chipset) Laptop is Fujitsu P5000
At least 1 PC has static IP and 2 PCs definitely DHCP, not sure about last one
All PCs have very similar software (XP SP2, Office 2003, SAV).
What happens: Existing network connections work, new ones do not establish. I.E. Outlook works fine if not closed, you launch Internet Explorer and it can't go anywhere, then you close Outlook, reopen, and it can't find server on local network. Ping / DNS resolution works all the time, didnt try telnet. IE / Firefox give cant find website right away, not even trying to connect. Same for remote desktop. Didnt try network browsing. Doesn't matter if wireless or not. Reboot PC, everything's back to normal. Happens every day, random timing, usually in about 24 hrs. You may work on PC or leave it. Happens for about 3-4 weeks now.
What Ive done: Scanned for viruses/spyware. Updated all drivers. Ran WinSockXP fix. Searched everywhere for fix very hard to describe the problem, can't find anything.
For some reason, I suspect some Windows update, but then again other PCs would be affected as well. Very hard to troubleshoot since the problem only happens once a day. Everything worked fine and for no reason it started happening. First on 1 PC, then on laptop, then on other 2 PCs.
any ideas? If need more info, I'll supply.
Thanks!

Answer : Windows XP Pro network connection drop - WEIRD problem

Hi All,
I'd been facing a similar problem, with Win2K3 Server R2 SP1 & WinXP SP2(all latest releases). Everything works fine for me till I've updated both the OSs with Automatic updates. Once the automatic update is complete, I'll lose the icons present in the "Network Connections" window. From then I'd not be able to change my network settings and so on, there is no end to the problems I faced. Then I just doubted the Windows updates, I tried this with a stand-alone WinXP & Win2K3 Server R2. I tried removing the installed updates one by one and at last all my regular OS & network functionalities started working, without a glitch, upon removal of the update listed in "KB902400".
Well it was quite tiring to try installing the patches one by one, restart everytime an update was applied(at least till I encountered this update and its associated problems).
