Question : How to troubleshoot Access is denied. Source file may be in use.

|
I need to copy data from an NT 4 NTFS partition to a W2K NTFS partition. These two networks are separate, connected through routers, with a one way trust reaching back to the NT 4 network from the W2K network. I am getting Access is Denied. Source file may be in use when I try to copy/paste data. The current data files I am trying to copy are user home shares.
The current share permissions are Admins and Domain Admins have full control, Domain users have List contents, user has everything except Full Control.
What am I missing here? Unfortunately, I am working with another sysadmin in a remote location, so I have to take his word that everything is set up correctly. My accounts are supposedly part of the domain and local admin groups. Could someone just suggest what would be neccesary to make this copy/paste work? The dent in forehead is getting painful. I know I am missing something silly.
thanx

YES -- realize that open files are locked by the operating system, and can only be copied with "snapshot" technology. Only a few programs use this, and even then, those open files change as we speak. So the backup utilities realize this, and basically try to copy everything, but if the file is locked, they just move on to the next. Explorer is STUPID, DUMB etc etc for not allowing you to do this. Keep in mind, if you want to backup the registry itself of the NT4 system, you need to shut down the OS. Then you can use ghost to copy it, or NT4 itself has the backup to diskette option for the registry. When I had NT4, I would run this disk backup of the system files at least once a week.
