Question : DHCP on windows server2003

From time to time i have asked questions about win 2003, well heres my latest, i have always managed to set up my own DHCP server side but from time to time on my questions people have answered that i should let my router which is a linksys wrt54g do the dhcp serving, which i would love to do but anytime i try to connect to it as a dhcp server, it always says this server is unreachable, i was wondering if there is indeed a way to use the router as dhcp server, because form what i have seen i have to have a dhcp server to administer Active Directory, any help would be greatful

Thanx,

Cokeman

Answer : DHCP on windows server2003

Windows 2000 onwards use DNS as the primary key for communication, hence, it is highly important to setup your DNS on your Windows 2003 correctly.

Once it's functioning, disable your DHCP Server on your server and give the server a static IP address (DHCP should never be used on the server).

On the router, configure DHCP service to provide IP Addresses (making sure the static IP address on the server is in the same subnet as the subnet for the network).

Straight after this configuration, reserve the IP address given to the server to avoid duplicate IP addressing!.

For DNS on the server (and if possible), on the router, set your DNS server address to your server (which I hope is giving Internet connection to the rest of the domain), it should work, if there's any problem, revert and I shall see if I am missing any issues here!

And finally, answering your question, to administer Active Directory, only DNS is required, not DHCP!!!
