Question : Can use "net view hostname" but cannot "ping hostname"

We have one computer on our Win2K network which we can use all the net view, net use etc. commands by hostname, but we cannot ping by hostname, even though we can ping by IP address. There are not any firewalls in the way, and if we reboot the troublesome computer, the problem disappears for a while and then comes back. We are using a messenging application that needs to be able to resolve the IP address of the hostname, which is why we noticed the problem. This is the only computer on the network that has this issue. We are running Active Directory on Windows 2K Server.
