Question : Hard-wire to wireless, speed questions

Hey, I'm about to change my internet provider at home: they're advertising speeds of 768mbps, 1.5mbps, and 3.0mbps. I won't be able to get a direct, wired, connection to my computer--everything will have to be wireless. My current router advertises up to 54Mbps: does this mean that the router is way over-prepared to handle the traffic from any of the advertised connections? It seems like this couldn't be the case--something must be off? I need to know if it's even worth the extra money for a better connection (if the router can't handle it in any case).

Answer : Hard-wire to wireless, speed questions

You probably mean 768 Kbps, rather than Mbps.  The 1 and 3 Mbps rates sound right.  In these cases, your router would be sufficient. Your local area network (LAN) is almost always much faster than your wide area network (WAN).  If you have an additional computer on your local network you will reap the advantages of the 54 Mbps onnection between machines.   Your connection to the WAN (the Internet in this case) will max out at the ISP's connection speed (768k, 1m, 3m, etc).
