Question : Explanation of subdomain and domain pointing

Hello,

I had my domain name registered at place A. Now I transfered the domain name to place B. This was 10 days ago and at place B I dont have a homepage, at place A I still have the homepage hosted. When I try to access my domain I still see my old homepage. Why is this?

I also have a webserver at place B. I registered a subdomain at place B and want to point that subdomain to the webserver. I used place B web interface and added my subdomain and pointed it to the external IP address of the webserver. This doesnt work and when I contact place B and asks about this, they say you need to configure the DNS on the webserver but I cant see why this is necessary at all. I mean when you try to access a homepage you are directed to the domain name's host and then pointed wherever the IP you supplied. Has nothing to do with the server you are pointing towards, right? If this theory is incorrect please enlighten me.

Ok so the question really is what do I do to point a webhosted subdomain name to an external IP?

Regards
Robert

Answer : Explanation of subdomain and domain pointing

This is how DNS works:

1) you register the domain name with a registrar
2) you provide the DNS servers for your domain in the registration process
3) you update the authoritative name servers to be authoritative for that domain
4) you create a 'www' record (or whatever) that points to the IP address of the webserver

If you gave us a real domain name and the new hosting provider, we could better trouble shoot the issue
