Question : FTP error message: 421 You are not permitted to make this connection

I am unable to get much in the way of substantive answers as to what the following FTP error message might mean:

421 You are not permitted to make this connection

I am trying to connect to a remote FTP machine and as far as I know, my credentials are perfect.  It seems as though the handshake itself fails before it even gets to that stage, though.

Any thoughts are most welcomed.

Answer : FTP error message: 421 You are not permitted to make this connection

Are you passing through a firewall? If so, make sure you are using a PASV (or passive) mode FTP session- it is supported on most FTP clients. Normal FTP sessions connect to a server, and then the server drops the session and connects back to the client. Firewalls, naturally, have a huge problem with connections from outside. Using PASV mode keeps the session running from cient to server (and not the other way around).
