Question : WinXP & Win2K network - How to eliminate logon requirement
|
|
Simple 2-computer peer-peer network; 1 WinXP (Home) and 1 Win2K Pro, connected thru a router. Both have Client for M'Soft Networking, File & Printer Sharing, and TCP/IP with NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled.
Network works fine EXCEPT for the following aggravation:
On the WinXP machine, I must use Windows Explorer to "look" at a shared resource on the Win2K machine - which will pop up a login window asking for a User Name and Password. After completing this everything works perfectlly. HOWEVER -- trying to access the Win2K machine (from the XP machine) with an application (e.g. Word, Excel, etc.) will not work until this is done -- and also does not generate the login window.
The Win2K machine works perfectly and can access the XP machine with no problems, no logon requirement, etc.
Both machines have identical user names and passwords (this was the first thing I tried). And both are members of the same workgroup.
I'd like to eliminate (or at least automate) the logon requirement.
Any ideas/solutions would be very much appreciated.

Answer : WinXP & Win2K network - How to eliminate logon requirement
|
|
1.add the username and password of the XP user to the w2k box or 2. enable the guest account on the w2k box Click on Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Computer Management. Look for Local Users and Groups under
System Tools (on the left side), and expand it to show the two folders, Users and Groups. Highlight
the Users folder, and then you'll see the Administrator and Guest account. Highlight the Guest account,
and click on Action. Go down to properties, and on the General Tab for Guest Properties, you'll see
the box checked for Account is Disabled. Uncheck it, and you should be good to go
