Question : Outlook Web Access, Outlook Mobile Access Configuration

Hi friends,

Could somebody enlighten me on setting up Outlook Web Access/OMA in an environment described below:

1. Exchange server 2003 SP2 (Standalone - NO FrontEnd BackEnd)
2. PIX firewall...cureently allows SMTP requests
3. IAS server.....( i do not know how that is configured yet...)
4. Windows Mobile powered Verizon SMT 5800.

We plan to deploy ActiveSync with DirectPush.

1. What are the configs needed on all the above entioned. I came across many internet articles with a Front End back end setup. Is OWA possible only that way or can it be set up using a standlaone exchange server?

2. When I sync directly with exchange....what are the objects that get synced. I am confused how Outlook works with Exchange mailbox. Please explain....what are the contents of a User Exchange mailbox, Outlook PST. Will the contacts taht I have on my Outlook get synced when I sync with Exchange Server directly?

3. Is it a mandatory that the ActiveSync software be installed on a Desktop for sync to work? I want it to do the wireless sync without the desktop cradle.

4. What happened to the old inbox.mdb and other outlook db files....have they been replaced by .pst?

5. how are ISA server and IAS server different?

Thanks

First any open port on a firewall is a security risk if it goes to your back end servers, that's why there are front end servers and DMZ's.  However if you keep your server's AV uptodate you should be fine.

Yes a seperate server license is required to setup the front end server, but you only need standard (even if the back end is enterprise).
