Question : Windows XP IP Configuration
|
|
I recently reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 9100 at work. The installations appeared to be successful but I am having trouble connecting to the domain and network. I have entered an assigned static ip address and the DNS server ips in the network properties window. When I go to control panel, system, network identification wizard I end up with an error "No DNS servers configured for local system". I then went to the command prompt and typed ipconfig and get "Windows IP Configuration". No ip numbers or anything else. Any suggestions?

Answer : Windows XP IP Configuration

If this is a Windows XP workstation and you receive nothing back other than "Windows IP Configuration" this typically indicates that the network card is disabled. You can re-enable the card by going into Network Connections, then right clicking Local Area Connection and pressing "Enable".
With Windows XP you can't really uninstall or reinstall TCP/IP, however you can perform a refresh on it, which will re-initialize it to it's original installed state. From a command prompt, type the following:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
This will take a couple seconds to run, and will not show anything on the screen before going to the next line. I do not believe this is your problem, however it doesn't hurt to try.
If you go into network connections and find there is no Local Area Connection listed, then you will have to install your network card drivers. You can do this by right clicking on "My Computer", going to Properties, then clicking the Hardware tab, and pressing the Device Manager button. When device manager opens, you should see a list of "Other Devices" and there will more than likely be a "PCI Ethernet Controller" listed there. Double click on it, and reinstall the driver. You will either need the original Dell CD that came with your computer, or you can download the driver for your onboard Broadcom 440x nic here:
