Question : dhcpd and netbios
|
|
Hello,
I can't find any documentation for these dhcpd options: netbios-name-servers netbios-dd-server netbios-node-type netbios-scope
These are valid options for the dhcpd server from isc.org (default dhcpd under linux) and are part of the dhcp standard.
A) Can anyone explain exactly what they mean?
My dhcpd.conf man page doesn't mention them. Many example on the Net report for e.g. netbios-node-type 2 or netbios-node-type 8 but none say what's the difference.
In particular, the "NetBios settings" pane in WindowsXP says: "Use NetBIOS setting from DHCP server. If static IP address is used or the DHCP server does not provide NetBIOS setting, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP." B) What dhcp option should I use to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the client?

I think this means that you do not want to use NetBios (it is not routable), which should mean that when configuring dhcpd that you can effectively ignore all of those netbios settings and it should provide defaults such as 'no WINS server'

This setting is normally at install time, with XP default of enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the client. This permits it to better share files (including malware), but is critical for most of the MS applications (that depend on it)
