Question : Sendmail primer ... need help understanding the basics

Hi, I am new to working with sendmail.  I want to configure this AIX server that is in a company's domain.  The mail server is an intel exchange server.  So the mail will ultimately leave the lan and enter the www via the exchange server.

I just don't understand how this works.  If I configure the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf to point to the exchange server

# Configuration version number
DZ8.9.3

# Added pnxgateway as the relay (forwarder). AKS 13-Dec-2002
DS xxxgateway.sue.com

on a different lan(company altogether)  The cf file has this entry ....
#DSmailer:relayhostname
DSsmtp:999EXC99

I know I'm being vauge, but that is because I don't know how this works.  Any help will be appreciated.

thanks!

Word of advice - do NOT hack sendmail.cf directly. Use sendmail.mc. See --> http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Email_Groupware/Sendmail/Q_21322113.html
