Question : PPTP VPN Disconnects RDP, Cannot Reconnect Back
|
|
I was trying to setup a VPN connection at work and using my home machine to test. Obviously I have to RDP into my home computer and then establishing the VPN connection. Once I hit connect, my RDP session would freeze up. Not knowing whether I successfully connected to VPN, I called my roommate to reboot my computer, still cannot ping/RDP in. I tried on another machine at another site, same thing. What's going on here?
Stats: VPN manually assigns IP, no conflict within that range. Serving using SBS 2003, connecting using XP Pro SP2. Thanks in advance.

Answer : PPTP VPN Disconnects RDP, Cannot Reconnect Back

This is normal behavior. Once you bind the VPN client, all traffic passes through it and all other traffic is disabled meaning you loose any other connections - hence your RDP session hangs.
The same thing would happen if you were actually at your home computer and established the VPN then tried to access a web page on the internet or any other content that's not available at the other end of the VPN connection. You should be able to RDP to the server's internal IP through the VPN.
Unless you configure an alternate default gateway (very risky) all traffic must pass through the VPN when it's active.
