Question : How to set up a LAN using the Windows XP operating system?

Hello

I would like to set up a Local Area Network in my home to connect all of my family PC together.
The 'server' or main computer is a desktop and will have a broadband internet connection coming into it.  It will also contain a second hard disk to act as a back up drive for the other two computers on the network.
Additionally I want to connect three laptop computers to this network.  These laptops need to be able to access the internet connection coming into the server and additionally all the PC's need to be able to access each other's files.
My house has been wired to take this network, there is a four port hub coming off the desktop PC to allow the other PC's to connect via cable.
Please could someone tell me how to, step by step, set up a LAN and Internet Connection on each of the PC's.  All systems will be running the Windows XP operating system.
Additionally, how do I know the network cards are connected / set up  properly on each PC?  If they are not, how do I set them up.

Any help / advice that anyone could give to this problem would be much appreciated.

Thank in advance & regards
David MacLean
