Question : Help - How to change/update my DNS
|
|
I apologize in advance for the "newbie" type question. I understand the basic concepts of DNS but I still can't quite wrap my head around it.
We currently run SBS 2003 Premium. In the server under the DNS forward lookup zones settings I have: _msdcs.internal DNS name.local internal DNS name.local companyname.com
Our email is via SMTP, not POP3. Our domain is hosted by a local company here in town. Today we purchased a package from Network Solutions so our nameservers will be changing. We want to completely eliminate this local company. Also, we are changing ISPs. We currently have Verizon DSL but will be moving to Comcast Cable. We have a static IP with Verizon and will have one with Comcast. Comcast installed our line today but I wanted to wait until Friday to make the changes due to the time it takes for the DNS to catch up.
My question is how do I update or change the information in my DNS? I am assuming I leave the first two zones alone (_msdcs.internal DNS name.local and internal DNS name.local). I do need to make changes to the companyname.com thought correct? It currently has all the info for the local host.
If anyone could assist me that would be great. I have been researching online all day and can't seem to figure this out.
Thanks!

Sorry I missed your responses over the weekend as I was away from the computer.
You really need to remove the companyname.com zone from your SBS's DNS if you've now moved the companyname.com website to a new server with a new IP address.
Also, run the following at a command prompt on your SBS:
C:\>ipconfig /flushdns
Furthermore, if you are running ISA Server 2004, it'll cache the old site as well. This will be updated in time, or you can use the CacheDir Tool found here to manually tweak the cache: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=88117626-D72C-4CC8-A15F-C1FBDBCFF688&displaylang=en
