Question : router not getiing internet acess.
|
|
Hello experts,
I have just installed a usb adsl cablemodem to get braodband from tiscali. I however need to have wireless so that I can use my laptop anywhere in the house to access the internet.
So I have done the following;-
1. I have connected the USB ADSL cable modem directly to my computer (THIS GIVES ME INTERNET CONNECTION ON MY PC) 2. I then connected my USB to my NIC (I am using an external USB/ETHERNET Adapter) 3. My laptop can pick up the wireless connection to the router. But it cannot access the internet.
I am guessing that this means that somehow, my router has no access to the internet, how do I make the router gain connection to the internet.
If I am barking completey up the wrong tree, please let me know what I a missing.

>>"The router actually provides the option to connect to internet the way i am doing it." Through another computer? That is unusual. I downloaded the manual and every configuration in the manual shows the router connected directly to the modem, which is the conventional method. I do appreciate that you do not have the necessary ports to make this connection, but I think you will need to invest in the appropriate hardware. Also the Modem manual states: "Q16: Does the USB support NAT/PAT? (NAT allows you to have multiple computers connected to one internet connection) A16: No. An USB modem can have only 1 host = 1 PC. NAT/PAT functionality is not logical. Connection sharing is possible through external programs ( i.e. Internet Connection Sharing in Windows )."
As for the IP configuration, the IP's 192.168.2.x are assigned by the router who's own IP is 192.168.2.1 You need a way for the local computers to direct the packets to the modem. This would normally be done by the router which "routes" the packets from the local network to that of the modem. Simply putting all the computers in the same subnet as the modem by changing their IP's, will not allow them to talk to the internet. If the routing is not going to be done by the router then you need to set the PC up to do it by using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing. ) The only way you can have more than one computer connected at once with your modem is to have a device/router running NAT (Network Address Translation) Both the router and ICS have this capability, so you will have to decide whether to try to configure ICS as in my earlier post, or purchase a different router or modem to allow you to do it with hardware, which is the better solution. I cannot guarantee you can get ICS working as described with a router. You can add a wireless card to the PC and remove the router all together and create an AD-Hoc wireless network using ICS if you like.
I hope I have explained this alright. Please let me know if not or you have specific questions. --Rob
