Question : IE stops & freezes.

I have a client that no longer can use IE6. When you start it up, the IE window comes up without a webpage, & then locks up. The PC doesn't lock up, just IE. I have to use C-A-D to shutdown IE, as the X box doesn't work to close it either. I have done the following:

Uninstalled IE6 & reinstalled it.
Installed IE7. This didn't work either so I uninstalled it back to IE6.
Ran IEFix. Twice.
Scanned for spyware with SuperAS & also scanned for a virus with AVG updated.
Cleaned out temp. internet files, cookies, & history.

He had Firefox installed & that worked fine, no problems. He is getting email thru Outlook & that is working fine. So it appears to be an IE only problem.

Does anyone else have any suggestions???

Answer : IE stops & freezes.

Greetings Blinkr !

1. An addon may be interfering. Disable Addons.  Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced. Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Click OK.

3. Reset IE settings.  Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

4. If no joy, check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable antivirus, firewall, antispyware, ad-blocker, popup blocker, and all Norton programs.

5. If no joy, run the System File Checker to repair any broken system files.  Go to Start > Run and type sfc /scannow
and hit OK.  You will need your Windows XP CD when asked.

6. If no joy, repair or reinstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP
