Question : WebSphere hangs when database goes down

My set up has 2 WebSphere servers with 5 instances on each.  There are about 20 databases to which the application connects. My problem is when even database goes down , some of the instances hang due to hung threads  and my whole application is down.

To recover i have to kill the instances .

How do i resolve this issue ?
