Question : VPN Connection Loss
|
|
I have a client with three locations - one of which is a VPN endpoint a NETGEAR VPN ROUTER FVS318s v3. The clients are remote, on seperate networks, so three networks in all using VPN client software. The VPN clients connect quickly and without error. I am able to ping the end point network computers and devices without error and can access remote applications. So all looks good, but there is a small issue. The VPN seems to lose its connection randomly. I can reconnect without issue, but the disconnect happens without fail. I set up a constant ping to try and see if this was something like a lease issue, but the timing is random. All software and firmware is updated. The configuration is tested and in use at other locations, so it would seem to indicate a local issue.
Any ideas would be apprecaited.

'Tweaking' the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) packet size can often help with dropped VPN connections. This should be done on the clients PC as well as their local router. The default is 1500. For testing try dropping it to 1300, see if there is any improvement, and if so gradually increase it. The PC can easily be changed using the DrTcp tool from http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp and the router can be set on the "LAN setup" page of it's web management console. Following links outline the issue and how to deal with it: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7752 http://www.chicagotech.net/vpnslow.htm
Another common source of dropped VPN connections is with PPPoE connections. Enabling the keep alive feature usually resolves this, but you ping test has probably ruled this out.
