Question : Can't connect Laptop to Internet
My wife received a Dell Inspiron 4000 from my son and I am trying to get it on the internet. I have a Cisco DSL Modem hooked to a Linksys wired 4 port router. I have 2 pc's on it now and all works well to the internet. When my son was here he plugged in to my router with his laptop and had no problems getting on the internet. I am using the same port and cable he used. I can see the rest of the network with the laptop and can ping websites in DOS mode all day long. I cannot get on the internet thru Win98SE. I am using a Netgear FA511 ethernet card and I have gone thru putting all the DNS numbers, etc in the Network tab and clearing everything out. The wife's pc is setup with abosolutely nothing in the network tab and I have tried it like that. I have used the router address as a gateway, enabeling and dis-abeling DNS, obtaining an IP address automatically and specifying an IP address. In the network panel I have: Client for Microsoft Networks Netgear ethernet card NetBUI TC/IP File and printer sharing I have Use DHCP for Wins Resolution checked, Obtain IP automatically, nothing in the gateway tab, DNS Disabled, Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer sharing checked in the bindings, No, to binding to ATM and a greyed out checkmark in Netbios support. I have attached several different pc's/laptops to this network at different times with no problem. This one is eating my lunch. I cannot get it to connect to save my life. Funny thing is, when she first got it, I plugged in and logged on with no problems. The only thing I did after that was to notice that several items weren't installed from Win98SE (games, address book and a couple other things) and so I installed them. It hasn't worked since. I have tried 2 different, brand new cards with the same results. I have tried tech support from Linksys and all their recommendations failed. I have gone thru several tutorials and tried everything they mentioned and it still won't work. I cannot connect to the internet using Win98SE on this laptop. If anyone can help me with this I would be very grateful! Thanks in advance. Sam

If you can ping by IP but not by name, then it's clearly a DNS issue. Run winipcfg on one of the machines that has Internet access and note the DNS server addresses. One the laptop, manually configure the DNS server entries to match the working computer and from the command line flush the dnscache. [ winipcfg /flushdns ] You may also need to reboot.
