Question : Moving DNS Roles

I have a Windows 2000 server that is running DNS AD Integrated, this server is also a Global Catalog server and domain controller. I have 3 other domain controllers two which are 2K3 and one other 2K, the other 2K server is also a Global Catalog server. The first mentioned 2K server is going to go away and I want to make sure I have no DNS issues when it does. One of the other existing 2K3 servers is a DC with DNS AD integreated so my thought is I should be okay to remove the 2K (after demoting it) with no problems. does this sound correct ?

Answer : Moving DNS Roles

You need to make sure that DNS is installed on at leat one other (preferably both) DCs and that at least one (preferably both) of the other DCs are global catalog servers.

What about DHCP - yo need to make sure that another server is configured as a DHCP server and is issuing IPs adn that the DHCP options include the reamianing DCs as DNS servers.

The FSMO roles need to be moved also - see http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm

to check:-

Power down to old DC and make sure that all is well, once satisfied power on the old DC again, then run DCPROMO for remove it's domain controller status. This is essential to avoid replication errors

If you want to remove the machine from the domain then you can do so one it's DC role has been removed
