Question : Cannot remotley connect to computers using names
|
|
I have just upgraded my network to gigabit ethernet. I replaced the nics in 5 of my servers. After bringing the servers back online and testing, everything seems to be working fine when i am onsite. But as soon as I go home and connect through VPN i am not able to use remote desktop and connect to a server by its name. However, I am able to connect using IP addresses. The 5 servers i replaced the nics in were:
DC01 (My primary DC) - which I can Remote Desktop in from home and connect using BOTH IP address and computer name
citrix01 - cannot connect to any of these servers using computer name "citrix01" I have to use IP to connect. citrix02 citrix03 citrix04
The funny thing is that when i am at work i can use remote desktop and connect to any server using its name. Could this be a DNS error resolving names...but it does work when i am on-site like i said. So it has to be something to do with connecting through a VPN. I think?!?! Any help would be appricated.

It's possible that when you switched it briefly to "optain IP address automatically", it reset the reverse-lookup. DHCP usually handles this itself. Once you hardcoded in a new address, you would have had to recreate the reverse entry.
Yes create reverse lookup entries for both DNS servers. This might fix the problem by itself. Since your DNS is probably AD-integrated, this may explain why the computers connected in the domain were able to access the DNS server without it though.
