Question : Removing offline Exchange Server

I have an Exchange server 2003 install that is constantly trying to replicate to an old server that was removed long before I started working here.  I am receiving Event ID 9318 Source: MSExchangeMTA, RPC communication error. Unable to bind over RPC and it mentions the old server.  I have been going through the instructions that I found here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822931 via another question here at EE.  As I'm going through the steps, obviously I'm not able to make any of the replications from the old machine as it is gone.  So I am trying to ensure that no replications are set to the old server.  I've gotten down to the "Designate another server to the be the routing master" section and I see that the current server is the master and the old server is a member.  I have the option to delete the old server here, via right click.  However, I am apprehensive to do that, should I?  The "Rehome connectors to another server" section of the article says that I should ensure that any connections that are hosted on the old server should be set up on the new server before deletion takes place.  I have to assume that everything is set up on the new server as it is, and has been for a while, working.

I am pretty new to Exchange and don't want to mess anything up.  Any advice?

Thanks,
Aron

Answer : Removing offline Exchange Server

If you select information store only then you have everything that you need to restore the Exchange server when you have separate domain controllers.

I suspect that old server is using the Exchange 5.5 system to access the mailboxes.
Personally would be looking to update the Backup Exec to the build that supports Exchange 2003 natively, install the updated management tools and reset the backups, so that things can be cleaned up.
