Question : Share files between an IMAC and Windows XP and keep the XP machine isolated from teh Internet
|
|
I have a customer with an IMAC connected to a 2Wire Home Portal using a DSL connection. He wants to share files from the MAC top his WIndows XP Pro machine while blocking internet traffic to the XP machine. Can this be done through the router (Home Portal) or can it be done with some sort of direct connection? I've tried setting up a MAC protocol on the WIndows machine but I can't find any. WHen I enable TCP/IP I can view hte netowk from the GUI in teh Home Portal but can't share any files. SO this question is kind of a double whammy. I need to share files AND keep the WIndows machine off the internet... rather block internet traffic INTO the Windows machine.
Any ideas??
Thanks

Answering here as this is the first one of 3 the same --
It is fairly easy to get a MAC to see a PC. All you have to do is enable the standard file sharing on the PC, with access granted to everyone, full read/write (right click on the drive, or a folder is better, with a name like "MAC-folder", do sharing, enable, and give read/write access).
Now, as long as both the MAC and PC are getting similar IPs on the same domain (they will get this from the router if it is deleivering DHCP) -- all you do in FINDER is choose CONNECT TO SERVER -- wait a minute for the Samba server list to come up, and then you will see the folder you shared "MAC-folder". To connect, you will have to enter the login name and password you use on the PC as the main account (user) you set up -- say "george" -- once you enter that in, you are connected, and can now drop any files from the MAC onto that folder on the desktop.
