Question : Internet Access:  Wired Connection Works, Wireless Does Not

Hi,

I have a Qwest DSL modum, Belkin Wireless Router Belkin  F5D7231-4P , and a new Compaq Presario V3000 laptop.

I am able to access the internet when the laptop is plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable, but I am unable to access the internet when the laptop is connected wirelessly.  I get a brower error when I try to connect wirelessly.  The wireless connection shows Connected in the Windows Wireless Network connection window.  The security I am using is WPA-PSK.   Windows Firewall in on.   But I am not able to connect to the internet wirelessly.

How can I troubleshoot this issue?  I have the laptop here at home, but I don't have the router or the DSL modum.

Thanks

Answer : Internet Access:  Wired Connection Works, Wireless Does Not

If the Qwest DSL has a router and it set up for DHCP, and I have the Belkin router connected via ethernet to the Qwest router, maybe that is part of my issue?
If I want to sue the Qwest modum router with the wireless Belkin router, how do I need to configure the Qwest router?

couple of things to check
start->run->cmd
ipconfig /all

find out what your gateway is. ping the gateway ip (something like):
ping 192.168.1.1 or whatever your gateway is.

the try to ping a know internet IP, so something like: ping 72.14.207.99 which is one of google.com IP's. Or 192.43.244.18 which is the time.nist.gov NTP server

if you can ping by IP, try pinging by DNS: ping google.com or ping time.nist.gov

if the ping by IP connects but the ping by DNS fails, then your problem is with DNS. If both fail your problem is something else.

One thing to check that could be confusing the router is if you have the LAN subnet the same for both the Quest and the Belkin (eg: both are set to use the 192.168.1.0 /24 subnet). But i would imagine this would probably give you a problem with the wired connection too so i doubt that's it.

Also try to update the firmware on the Belkin. See if that makes a difference.

As was already noted, you can try to put the modem in bridge mode then move whatever devices are currently hooked up to the Quest so that they're behind the Belkind device.

One last thing to check that i've seen a couple of times may seem a bit odd, but if you have the SSID for the wireless device and there is another device with the same SSID you may be initially connecting to the correct network, then jumping to the wrong one. Since the WPA key is wrong, your connectivity may fail.
