Hello, I'm trying to set up an FTP server using SERV-U and need it to be accessible from the web, I'm trying to configure port forwarding in my hp procurve 7203dl router, I need to know, is it really necessary to do this step? Is there another way to do this?

Yes, it's necessary if you want external user from Internet connect to it : PAT Port Address Translation.
