Question : How to build web-hosting server on linux

I want to start web-hosting server, first I want to start home based cheap solution to test that I can do that or not.
For that I need road-map steps which hardware should I choose, whic linux version I need and how to install and work.
Then as a professional company, which server (hardware) should I buy, Is it worth to keep servers at home or should I keep in
data centers? How many websites can be hosted on a server just general idea...
I want to run apache/mysql/php/jsp mail server, ftp server and vnc view for remote access.
Please give detail solution.

Hi,

Running a web hosting @ home is a very bad idea. You should always take servers from datacenters.
A few good datacentes with good servers and network and deals are:  www.theplanet.com  www.softlayer.com www.pacificrack.com  www.layeredtech.com   www.bocacom.net  www.fdcservers.net etc

Hosting involves a lot of components .. http, email, mailing-list, anti-spam filters, ftp, web based management etc and if you want to do it all by yourself, it will be a pain. Therefore for hosting, there are 3 good control panels available:   www.directadmin.com   www.cpanel.net and www.plesk.com .. you can select any of these for hosting and you will be ready to run.

so, shop around the datacenters as they will give the control panel for hosting also.

Its all web based, so you can do it.
