Answer : how do I setup windows xp machine as a dial in server

You don't need windows 2003 to enable VPN connection unless you want to use more then one machine etc. You can do it with windows XP.

Lets start again.

Lets say the machine you configure as Dialin Server is call D-XP and the machine that will be calling is C-XP.

On D-XP, is the modem and phone line working? Can you open up dialer and call any phone number? Click on Start/Run then type dialer and click OK. Just call your phone number to confirm that it is not an issue of phone line of Modem. When done, close the Dialer.

If it works:

Delete the existing Incomming connection and create a new connection.

Click on "New Connection Wizard"
Click on "Next"
"Setup and Advanced Connection" Next
"Accept Incomming Connections" Next
"Select you Modem" Next
"Allow VPN Connections" Next
"Select user" Next
Highlight TCP/IP and Assign and range OR if you have DHCP, select that and click Next
Click on Finish.

Then dial the number for your D-XP machine and see if it picks up from any phone.
