Question : When to use Plenum Cable?

Can anyone tell me when you are required by fire code to use Plenum grade network cable, such as category 5? If they go inside a wall and a tile ceiling, does it have to be plenum cable? Anyone know any resources to look up the data cable fire codes for new york state?

Any info on when and when you don't have to use plenum grade cable would be greatly appreciated!

Answer : When to use Plenum Cable?

Plenum cable does nothing for protecting against EMI or EFI versus PVC cabling.  Plenum rated cabling simply has a jacket made of different materials which has different properties while burning - including the gasses given off.  If you are concerned about EMI/EFI then you should look at SHIELDED twisted pair (STP) or perhaps Fiber - both of which are Plenum rated or not.

The Plenum is the air-handling space.  According to the NEC (National Electrical Code), you only need Plenum rated cabling when it is being used in the Plenum.  The Plenum is any space that is designed to be part of the air handling space.  So, if you have duct work that doesn't have returns or discharges above, below, or inside walls, it's NOT part of the Plenum.  However, if you are dealing with a pressurized, raised floor - for example, then the space under the raised floor IS part of the air-handling space and Plenum rated cabling would be required by code.

In certain instances, Riser rated cabling may be substituted for Plenum rated cabling.

Hope this helps.
