Question : DNS - can you assign a subdomain a DNS server of it's own?

Hi, I've actually got a simple but off the wall question...

Can you assign a subdomain of a domain a DNS server of it's own (NOT a Windows domain, but a public ICANN domain)?

For example, I run my domain off of zoneedit's nameservers. Can I make a subdomain, say SUB.MYDOMAIN.TLD have it's own nameserver (preferably in internal one)?

I'm a web designer and need to be able to host client sites while in development WITHOUT having to wait for my DNS service to change their records, so it'd be great to be able to run my own DNS server from inside the organization where I can make changes to the DNS on the fly and the customer can see the site in progress?

or... do I have to purchase another public domain?

Thanks!

Answer : DNS - can you assign a subdomain a DNS server of it's own?

Now going back to the original requirement, you have:

1- mydomain.tld served / hosted by ZE dns servers

your requirement is:

1- have a sub domain sub.mydomain.tld being served by a dns server managed by you

This is possible, but under your mydomain.tld you need to delegate zone management of sub.mydomain.tld to your own dns server. This is to be done on ZE DNS servers by adding NS record for sub.mydomain.tld pointing to your dns server.

2- You want clients web sites under development to be served by your dns to be quick in changes.

This is possible by having those websites to be under sub.mydomain.tld.

e.g. clientsilte1.sub.mydomain.tld

Hope I was able to answer your requirement
