Question : configuring a wireless broadband router
|
|
Hello,
I have two dell laptops and a truemobile 1184 wireless router. The laptops use XP Home and function as a workgroup. I currently am not using any encryption key as I share my broad band with my neighbor who splits the bill with me. The problem is that if I share any of my folders on the network, my neighbor can also see these shared folders.
Is there any way to set this up so that my neighbor only gets internet service and only my computers have access to my shared folders?
Maybe a second hub or maybe some firewall setting on the router? Please advise and be specific.
Thanks, Chuck

Sorry I took so long, I've been on vacation. To answer your last question:
Wireless RouterA - Channel 2 Connected directly to internet - Shared to Neighbor WAN: Same as it is now. "CURRENT IP OF THE ROUTER IS 192.168.2.1 WOULD THAT BE THE WAN ADDRESS?" >>No, It will be a dynamic IP address assigned to you by your ISP, unless you paid for a static IP. Go to http://whatismyip.com to see your real WAN IP address. You have to leave the WAN interface on this router configured however your ISP tells you to (probably DHCP). Also, WAN addresses can never start with 192.
Lan Address: 192.168.0.1 Not encrypted - DHCP , "I AM NOT SURE WHAT THIS IS, IS IT A SETTING ON THE ROUTER?" >>Yes, DHCP is a setting on your router that stands for "dynamic host control protocol". DHCP automatically gives out IP addresses to the end user(your neighber) without the need for configuration. You will need to specify what DHCP information the router will give out (Range of IP's to use, Default Gateway, DNS Servers).
_______________________________________________________
Wireless Router B - Channel 9 Wan Port Plugged into Wireless RouterA's Lan Port Wan Address: 192.168.0.254, "DO I CHANGE THE IP FROM AUTO OBTAIN TO THIS SPECIFIC IP ADDRESS ON THE ROUTER?" >>Yes Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, "IS THIS A SETTING ON THE ROUTER?" Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1, "IS THIS A SETTING ON THE ROUTER?"These are all settings for the WAN interface you will have to specify when you change from DCHP (auto). Lan Address: 192.168.1.1 Encrypted - "DHCP, IS THIS A SETTING ON THE ROUTER?">> Yes, same as above.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Later, Digus
