Question : Do we use IPSec in VPN?

Do we use IPSec in VPN? Please let me know.. I would like to understand how VPN works.. My laptop is getting public IP from my ISP while using ADSL router. So I was thinking to configure the VPN. Thanks!

VPN's typically incorporate the IPSEC protocol suite to secure the traffic flow. VPNs do not have to use IPSEC, MPLS can deliver a VPN with or without IPSEC.

If it's over the internet, secure it, use IPSEC.
