Question : Browsing the network over VPN
|
|
I have connected to my LAN via VPN to a multihomed NT4 SP6 server from an NT4 SP6 wkst. The server has one private IP(192.168.x.x) and one public IP (38.23.x.x). When I logon, it shows that I have been authenticated and am logged on to the network. In server manager, however, my computer does not look to be active on the network(its grayed out). I cannot see any of the other workstations in Network Neighborhood. I can ping all the private addresses. If I do a find by computer name, I get nothing but if I search for that same computer's IP it shows up but the location is unknown. If I try to open it, the Enter Network Password dialogue box opens. This share isn't password protected. Also, If I search for the VPN client's IP address from one of the LAN machines, I can find it, open it and browse it with no problem. I am Thankful for any help that anyone can offer me.

tracert may be a bit tricky over VPN.
-1-Can you ping ? -2-If yes, can you telnet ? (for example to an internal pop3 server) so telnet mailserver pop3 -3-If yes, can you ping by netbios name ? -4-If yes, does a NET VIEW /DOMAIN:DOMAINNAME works ? -5-If yes, does a NET VIEW \\YOURSERVER works ?
For the netbios name resolution, the quickest, is to use WINS. If no WINS, write an equivalent LMHOST file.
